PRESS RELEASE
With mounting pressure to raise the
remaining funds in time for the scheduled launch of the second jumbo, the St.Ives Jumbo Association are delighted to announce they
have received royal support from HRH Prince Charles via The Duke of Cornwall's
Benevolent Fund.
"The recognition by HRH Prince Charles
of this important project is a huge boost for the town of
In order to maintain the momentum of
the project and make full use of the forthcoming season, organisers
are committed to keeping to the scheduled Launch Day of Saturday 24th
April, if at all possible.
"Launch Day will be about much
more than putting another boat in the water." says Jonny
Nance, "It will be the launch of a brand new racing
class that will be unique to St.Ives.
Racing will be a fun and dynamic means of encouraging people to engage with the
sea and each other whilst celebrating the town's rich heritage. The
excitement of racing will generate its own momentum that will
enable the class to develop into the future."
Plans for racing are already advanced:
St.Ives Sailing Club have risen to the Association's
challenge and, forsaking their high-tech dinghies, will be competing for
the Godrevy Cup in a series of races throughout
the season, culminating at Boats in the Bay 2010 next
September. Martin Potter, the Club's Commodore, said there was 'an
enthusiastic response' when these proposals were presented at their AGM
last Friday. Anyone wishing to participate is encouraged to register their
interest with either organisation.
'Much has been achieved over the short life
of the Jumbo Association and it has not gone unnoticed. From the emails our
website receives it is evident many eyes worldwide are
watching this project unfold and now, as this recent photo of
the new jumbo shows, we are so nearly
there!' Jonny explained.
"We hope the support from the Prince
will encourage anyone interested to help us raise the remaining
£11,500 required before the launch can take place. Anyone doing so at this
stage would see an almost immediate result and would know they had
a hand in making maritime history in St.Ives"
